Ahmad Ahmad Unwavering On 24-Team AFCON

CHANNELS TELEVISION | African football supremo Ahmad Ahmad insisted on Tuesday he is not backing down over plans to increase the AFCON from 16 to 24 teams despite Cameroon’s organisational struggles.

Back in August, world governing body FIFA appointed a committee to run crisis-hit Cameroonian football amid growing fears the country would not be able to host the 2019 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

And despite the country’s difficulties in completing necessary infrastructure, Confederation of African Football president (CAF) Ahmad said no compromise will be made regarding the number of participating countries.

“If the host country cannot organise it (the CAN) we’ll find another country that can,” Ahmad said on Tuesday during a visit to Abidjan.

The 2019 edition is due to be the first to see 24 teams qualify, a 50 percent increase on previous editions.

“With regards Cameroon 2019, I cannot predict anything but all the authorities within the country right up to the head of state have always assured us they will be ready,” added Ahmad.

Back in August, Ahmad had warned that Cameroon “isn’t ready to welcome even four teams”, although Cameroonian President Paul Biya had insisted his nation “will be ready when the day comes”.

  1. I am confident the president of CAF is very cautious when an oligarch like Mr. Biya makes promises. I do not see Cameroon delivering a competition for even 8 nations, and I am a huge soccer fan in Cameroon who has closely followed events in this country for more than 3 decades.

  2. Of course, LRC will NOT be ready. To add salt to injuries, the atmosphere will not be conducive to welcome foreign guests,
LRC is fighting wars on multiple fronts. The wars will intensify in 2019 The danger of a terror attack will therefore be extremely high.

CAF should ignore the assurances of Dictator Biya and award the competition to another county.

  3. Take elsewhere. How can a competition of that magnitude be played in such unstable nation.Equatorial guinea can take it.

  4. Vaiocomputers

If my assertion is right,CAF also has an arsenal of security experts. With the current disposition,Cameroon is not fit to host such an event. There are every indications that the multiple attacks on LRC will continue into 2018.So…in my honest opinion,CAF should have plan B and it should be now,not when Cameroon falters.
