Cameroon: 34 declared missing after military ship sinks off the country’s coast

The vessel with 37 on board had been on a routine mission to the oil-rich Bakassi peninsula when it went underwater.

At least 34 people were declared missing in Cameroon on Monday after a military ship sank off the country’s coast in the Atlantic on Sunday. Defence Minister Joseph Beti Assomo said there were 37 people on board the vessel, which was on a routine mission to the oil-rich Bakassi peninsula in the Gulf of Guinea when it went underwater, AP reported.

Military personnel are carrying out search operations. Three soldiers have been rescued so far, the minister said.

While how the ship sank remains unclear, reports suggest that the vessel capsized because of unexpectedly turbulent waters, according to Cameroon Radio Television.

The control centre raised an alarm after losing contact with the military vessel. Patrols were sent out immediately to locate the ship, read a press release from the Defence Ministry. Helicopters are believed to have been able to spot traces of fuel, after which patrols were sent to the likely location of the wreckage.

  1. This Is retaliation from Nigeria for your blood thirsty rampage against your own people because they speak English…an the 97 Nigerians you murdered. Kill more Nigerians, the reprisal will come hat Dr.

    • @Oje: hope you don’t have a relation or friend among the missing Cameroonians. Your comment which is unfounded and makes no sense is just a disgrace. Let God console the families of the missing soldiers.

      • @ Derick: An army ship that capsizes in turbulent waters cannot be a proper warship! The deliberate use of the word “ship” in the report sanitizes the low grade equipment, probably a boat with engines, carrying the soldiers? The Ministry of Armed Forces has to rethink its strategy. What is the chance of winning a naval war if the troops cannot survive a short journey in peace time on turbulent waters? As an oil producing country, we must not suffer this kind of tragedy again. R.I.P.

  2. My heart-felt condolence to all the fallen soldiers and their families.

  3. May God console the families of the bereaved…I agree…also the families of those poor Anglophones killed….much worse, thosen8u Nigerians killed for not paying taxes. Nigeria warned there will be reprisal, but sure BIYAS Elite BIR are used to getting their way. Not this time. If you think this is a ruse, kill more Nigerians by pretex or accident and see what happens. No need to claim credit, Nigeria Is not Cameroons enemy, but there will be consequences if these senseless killing of innocent people continue.

  4. The Gulf of Guinea is notorious for high waves due to ocean expanse. Usually troops travel in unsinkable ships that literally tunnel through waves and have more than one engine. B.I.R operates motorized canoes that would be suitable for inland waterways, not the mighty Atlantic ocean. Give these boys and men the right equipment to stop these disasters. Chose and spend right to save the lives of soldiers.

  5. Cameroon armies wilfully killed those 97 Nigerians in Bakassi becos Nigeria is harbouring SC’s newly created gov’t.Nigerian Minister of Interior and foreign minister are in Cameroon to get explanations..amid tension…
While Biya is lobbying so hard to meet Macron…
@Ras Tuge..,So u are sending heart felt condolences to the soldiers that died, but refused to send condolences to the anglophone protesters that died huh?…ha ha ha ha…U this man from melon..Your manipulative tactics is on full display for all to see.

  9. And Peter removed his sword and chopped the ear of one roman soldier then Jesus said no Peter. He took the piece and healed him. You can keep on fighting and wishing death to others for God is watching. I am tired of people justifying death and they pretend to advocate better lives for all.

More and more soldiers will continue to miss, that is just the punishment for the heinous crime committed by Cameroonian army against the aborigine of Bakassi. There are better ways to evict people from their ancestral homes, and killing them is not one.

killing Innocent Nigerians in the name of tax is absurd and unprofessional. Under the UN treaty signed by both countries the aborigine of Bakassi where exempted from tax.

    Sad.

  11. What were they doing on our land? Our better trained elite force simply crept up to them and made sure the fish below had enough for dinner plus some reserves! Now they will know that we shall star coming unannounced! The cockroaches were gulping alcohol without knowing we had eyes on them. This is what you get when you receive training from Kim Jung Un! I hear some of the supply was a pack of diapers for the kleptomaniac in etoudi, Yaoundé! He has become master of incontinence due to all that is going on around him! Shumbu who told you to rape and kill and jail our people? Nyamfukah

  12. For ever young

Firstly their ancestral home was obtained illegally by their parents because it’s Southern Cameroonian landscape, secondly don’t think dis particular elite military brigades was involved in the killing of those Nigerians fishermen, from my understanding bout that incident its was the gendarmerie officers that carry out those atrocities, that said I pay my sincere condolences to the families of all those killed in dis accident RIP& the fishermen also because nobody asked the gendarme to be prosecutors, judge,& jury against those fishermen reasons why most people dislike those thuggish officers

  14. It is so sad to loss loved ones. Accidents and such unexplained mishap happens for a reason. I think it is God’s desire to make the other side also feel what it means to lost someone. Karma is such a powerful weapon and it will take any form. How does it feel when the breadwinner is death or in other situation- killed or locked up? God is trying to pass on a message to Cameroonians- do onto others what you want others to do onto you. To lost someone be it from such mishap or from the acts of others doesn’t trigger off the best feelings in the minds of the affected families.

  15. who can battle with the Lord? all the evils shall be exposed, those who are crying today shall laugh tomorrow and forever because GOD is for them. our fervent prayers will be herd and sorrows will end.
