Cameroon separatist leader launches hunger strike

Yaoundé (AFP) – The jailed head of Cameroon’s anglophone separatists, Julius Sisiku Ayuk Tabe, has launched a hunger strike to protest the “disappearance” of co-detainees following prison riots, one of his lawyers said Thursday.

Ayuk Tabe, self-proclaimed president of “Ambazonia”, the breakaway state the separatists want to create in the central African country, stopped eating as of midnight Tuesday along with nine of his supporters, lawyer Joseph Fru told AFP.

In a letter to Cameroon Justice Minister Laurent Esso whose authenticity was verified by AFP, Ayuk Tabe said the unlimited hunger strike was in protest at the disappearance of “our compatriots” from the two prisons.

Hundreds of inmates mutinied at an overcrowded central prison in the capital Yaounde on July 22, then the next day at a prison in Buea, the capital of one of Cameroon’s two minority anglophone regions.

The rioters, many of them government opponents or supporters of the English-speaking separatist movement, filmed their protest and posted elements to Facebook.

The government announced 177 arrests including of anglophone separatists.

But it denied rumours that an anglophone leader Mancho Bibixy had been tortured and killed at the hands of the authorities.

Yaounde’s Kondengui prison was built to accommodate 1,500 inmates but is estimated to house more than double.

It holds many inmates arrested since the security crisis pitting separatist English-speaking regions in the west against the French-speaking population elsewhere started in 2016.

Several are serving long prison sentences, while others are awaiting trial.

Since 2017, the fighting has killed hundreds and forced more than 500,000 people from their homes.

  1. Camer believer (Colby)

Who mandated them to speak on behalf of the people of the NO/SW?how and when did they get elected? We all know power devolution means in cameroon.

    • @Colby you are a special specie of stupid. Was Mandela elected when he went to prison for 21years?moron.CPDM troll .

      • You are the stupid one here.
Mandela was fighting from within and his impact could be felt.
Who is this moron called Ayuk? nobody knew this dude 3 years ago.
so please do not confused the confused or your attempt to deceive will no go unchallenged

        • Here comes the minister of hate and ethnocentrism @mbappe please crawl back to the hole you are coming from. If Ayuk’s impact is not being felt then why is the still a crisis in Cameroon. Ayuk will die a great man the day you @mbapppe aka gorilla form the south die we shall urinate on your grave deuche bag

        • @Mbappe goat head and his corrupt criminal friend @colby sh$t filled mouth. Listen, u sissies are nothing compared to these brave men in ur concentration camp. All the Beti-Bulu-Bassa thieves that went into Kondengui decided to give their sh%tholes to elitist sect members for a daily dose of survival focking but guess what, ‘the Abmazonian prisoners are riding high and breeding fire right inside your Kondenugi pigsty concentration camp. If their actions are irrelevant why are u gorillas all panicking and leaving half-baked comments behind faceless monikers? You sh&tty brains could not even design or fix your own IT systems and had to beg for the same Ayuk Tabe and Dr Cornelius to come and do it for free. Today u are caging them and pretending they don’t count. We will fix this mistake now.

    • All the newspapers in the Cameroons are bought over by Camerounese govt. An independent study carried out indicated that almost all the newspapers in that country have received money from the ruling government and are told on what and how to report. Names such as northwest and southwest should be used and the name anglophone is barned, They encourage them to use camerounization to annex the former British Southern Cameroons. They warned all the newspapers to paly down on any opinion against calling on the Cameroun military withdrawal. The world no longer believes in any story carried out by cameroun newspapers. Every one relies now on social media. It’s said that the lazy diaper-wearing leader of the Cameroons is in a doubtful condition.

      • Laziness is not good fro you.
Copy pasting your rubbish all over the place will it make relevant.
U have nothing substantial to bring to this debate

  2. I am pleading with Sissikou Julius Ayuk Tabe, to see food, as a gift from God almighty.
Let him eat. It is not from Mr. Biya or any of his henchmen. They are decendants of
demons that were not cast out of man, in the time of Jesus Christ.
This is the time to see the actions of Cardinal Tumi, the Moderator of the PCC, the
Catholic Church etc etc. Or are they only bordered about school resumption come
    september?

    • Zam-Zam, the sh%t mouth imbecile whose price tag is printed on his big Bamileke/Beti face thinks everyone is easily susceptible to bribe like his corrupt self. Yes, Ayuk Tabe can resist all that you are so irresistible to including millions of dollars you Swine. He is going on hunger strike because he is not a Camerounian like your dirty self. Why are you monkeys all panicking if his actions don’t mean a thing? Lazy wicked corrupt bastards. Even in Kondengui Ayuk and his boys have shown you gorillas who the real men are. They don’t carry guns but their big hearts and just standing is something you corrupt monkeys can never take away from them. God curse the day our ancestors decided to open our doors to you wicked corrupt smelly criminal thieves. Blackman’s disgrace. We will fix this error

      • L’enemie,

    • @ZZ

      • A very different Bikutsi from the one who suggested 4 years ago that we should put up, do something about it or shut up. Well well well, the 2 cubes of sugar have refused to melt.

      • Kikiki, Bikut!

Le pays là t’a fait un peu du bien, ta maison c’est du côté du peuple. Nous mm, nous sommes des détenus, ainsi a décidé Zambeu d’Afrique, kikiki…

      • Truth and Facts

        Hmmmm!

Maybe the Bitkusi I once “saw” here is back.

I have always presumed that an Anglo brother maybe be keeping you happy. And when that relationship goes south, your objective thinking goes with it. I presume an Anglo bro treated you with the real thing while in Victoria. I hope this time around the relationship last long.

Anyway, I am glad for you. Stay happy and keep enjoying the treatment.

Nice to have you back. It seems your internet access while in CMR were limited or you were just being taken good care of.

The fact that we are all escaping CMR is very telling. Even the president don’t like living in the country.

Please go often to CMR. It does you good. See you in Victoria one day. I hope that city to is remain to a Bakwerian name one day.

  4. It is disgusting that sane human beings turn their backs to crude, wickedness being carried out on fellow human beings! Does the denial of justice and fair play enhance the image of the nation, encourage foreign investment? If such treatment is allowed to become the norm, what stops it being applied to those shamelessly jubilating today?

There is absolutely no reason to sweep citizens from the streets into concentration camps. Judges usually dismiss and throw out cases that have no substance!!!!

No condition is permanent; those sitting on the lid of reforms to suffocate innocent ones below need this reminder that first president, Ahmadou Ahidjo was tried and condemned to death using the very law he himself signed.

  5. Human beings, are a terrible thing God ever created. With all this happening, even
the Cardinal, has yet not had what to go and discuss with Biya, but to still want to
hold his whatever. Even at this point, Dion Ngute, can not do something, to help his
own. Even at this point, Atanga Nji, sees no need to think about the other person.
Even at this point, the women, still don`t care. Even at this point, cameroon, is one
    and indivisible etc etc.
But the lord`s time, is ahead.
