Cameroonian government rules out postponing general elections

CGTN Africa | The Cameroonian government ruled out the possibility of postponing general elections scheduled for February 2020, a government spokesperson said on Monday.

“The government condemns all maneuvers that amount to blackmail and one-upmanship, and denounces the various foreign attempts to interfere, which are in violation of our laws, and which are advocating further postponements, indefinite postponements, of announced legislative and municipal elections,” Cameroon’s government spokesperson Emmanuel Rene Sadi told a press conference late on Monday.

Cameroon has already postponed the elections twice and the law prohibits further postponement, Sadi said.

Last week, Cameroon’s opposition leader Maurice Kamto said his party Cameroon Renaissance Movement would boycott the polls, citing insecurity in the English-speaking regions and “biased” electoral code.

Another major opposition party Social Democratic Front has also threatened to boycott the elections if “peace and security” is not restored in Cameroon’s Anglophone regions before the elections.

Sadi said the government reassures that “all security conditions and all measures to ensure the reliability of the electoral process will be taken.”

Elections for members of National Assembly and municipal councillors will take place on February 9, 2020, in Cameroon.

Separatists have vowed to disrupt the elections in the Anglophone regions where they are seeking to create an independent nation they call “Ambazonia.”

Since 2017, government forces have been clashing with armed separatist forces who want the two English-speaking regions of Northwest and Southwest to secede from the majority French-speaking nation.

  1. It is a blessing in disguise for the LEGITIMATE struggle that ” the Cameroonian government ruled out the possibility of postponing general elections scheduled for February 2020″.
It will be another window of opportunity for the “secessionists” to prove, beyond a reasonable doubt, to the international community that the so-called “one and indivisible” LRC is not only DIVISIBLE but also a FAKE.
Amba boys and Amba girls have vowed to disrupt the farce in SC. with the help of a two weeks MAMIWATER ghost town. The figures for SC that will be fabricated in Etoudi palace and transmitted to ELECAM will be dismissed by the international community as fake.

    • O! If wishes were horses, beggars would ride.

Paul Biya took over a one-party rulership, reluctantly embraced multi-party democracy with all the trappings of the same one-party dictatorship and said he would like to be remembered for bringing “advanced democracy”.

Now that all other parties are withdrawing their participation in the planned legislative and municipal elections, the country has turned through 360 degrees back to one-party rulership. That is the type of democracy Mr. Biya will be remembered for bringing to Cameroun.

      • By the way, Parliament just passed into law a bill against tribalism. So watch out!!! Hate speech, calling SW citizens dogs or cockroaches, treating all of English-speaking Cameroon as a tribe called “Les Biafrais” can earn imprisonment and heavy fines.

        • All this is happening in that country, because Cameroonians, see
Biya as `god`. He can catapult someone from a street boy, to a
minister, director etc and larvish money like crazy. Reason why,
he has managed to remain god for close to 40 yrs. Anything he
says or commands, is good. What a man, what a people.

    • This is just another proof that Biya profits from Ambazonia foolishness. @ Unstoppable, Let me advise you that there is no western country that’s going to support people who try to shoot down commercial planes for this is what the Arabs have been trying to do to them. Always try and use your f’cking brains Ambafools.

      • Camair-co was extremely lucky this time around because Pa Che failed to supply the RPGs purchased by the “secessionists”. However, the next attack is just around the corner. Camair-co planes are considered as LEGITIMATE targets since they are used to transport LRC TERRORISTS and their weapons.
Any civilian who, by omission or design, decide to use the military Camair-co planes will be doing so at his or her own risk. SC is under attack by terrorists from LRC The homeland must be defended by all means available.

        THE WAR CONTINUES.
