Cameroon’s President Paul Biya Returns After 73-Day Absence

CAMEROONONLINE.ORG | Cameroon’s President Paul Biya has returned home after spending more than two months abroad, ending an unusually long absence that fueled widespread speculation about his health and the country’s political leadership.

The 93-year-old president arrived in Yaoundé from Geneva, Switzerland, on Thursday after about 73 days outside Cameroon. His prolonged stay abroad — reportedly the longest recorded absence since he took power in 1982 — had raised questions about his ability to continue governing and concerns over a possible leadership vacuum.

Biya’s health has long been a sensitive political issue in Cameroon, where official information about his medical condition is limited. His latest absence once again highlighted uncertainty over succession in a country he has governed for more than four decades.

His return may temporarily ease speculation, but questions about his health, political stability, and Cameroon’s future leadership are unlikely to disappear. With Biya now in his 90s, every prolonged absence is increasingly viewed not simply as a personal matter, but as an issue with major implications for the country’s political future.
