Liverpool defender Joel Matip linked with shock transfer to PSG as Thiago Silva replacement

talkSPORT.com | Paris Saint-Germain are interested in signing Joel Matip in a shock £50million transfer, according to reports.

The Liverpool defender managed just 13 appearances in an injury-ravaged 2019/20 Premier League-winning season.

During Matip’s time on the sidelines, Joe Gomez has formed a solid defensive partnership with Virgil van Dijk.

Cameroonian outlet Kick442 claim PSG want to splash the cash on Matip as a replacement for Thiago Silva.

The 35-year-old will end his eight-year spell in the French capital when PSG’s Champions League campaign concludes this month.

The Ligue 1 champions face Atalanta in the quarter-finals of the competition on Wednesday.

And Matip, who joined Liverpool on a free transfer from Schalke in 2016, is in PSG’s sights.

The Cameroon international played a vital role in Liverpool’s sixth European Cup triumph last year.

He played the full 90 minutes in a 2-0 win over Tottenham in the Madrid final.

Matip’s form saw him rewarded with a new long-term contract last October, with Reds boss Jurgen Klopp dubbing the 28-year-old ‘world class’.

He said: “Joel has been operating as a world class centre-half throughout this year and long may it continue.

“I haven’t seen many in his position performing with the consistency and quality he has been.

“I’m fortunate to be able to pick from such outstanding talent.

“Off the pitch, Joel is one of the nicest, most humble guys you could wish to meet, but on it he is a fighter, someone who gives everything to try to help the team get the victory. He has a winner’s mentality.

“He loves what he is doing and for us to have him here for even longer is perfect for us all.”
