SONARA: Cameroon state oil refinery declares force majeure after blast

Sowetan | Cameroon’s state oil refinery declared force majeure on Saturday, after a storage tank exploded overnight, causing a fire that shut down output at its main refinery in Limbe but caused no deaths.

A letter to its partners seen by Reuters said the fire had “caused a production stoppage at all of our units for a period to be determined.”

Cameroon’s Sonara refinery, which is almost entirely state owned apart from a 4% stake held by Total, has a capacity of 2.1 million tonnes of crude a year. It serves the whole country, so any delay in getting it back up and running has the potential to cause severe fuel shortages.

It is also a major supplier to the region, including Nigeria, Togo and Ghana, with some products also being exported to the United States and Europe, according to its website.

A Sonara spokesman declined to comment.

On Twitter, the company wrote that “there were no deaths nor injured,” in the blast.

A project has been under way for nearly a decade to try to boost its capacity to 3.5 million tonnes, but Sonara has struggled to raise the needed finance.

  1. The hand of the clock is beginning to reach midnight. Affair a suivre.

  2. Cameroon a Ticking Time Bomb under Paul Biya. The sooner we cameroonians wake up and recliam our inheritance from this man the better it will be for this current generation and for feature generations. Are we going to wait for this man to destroy the whole country before leaving? Everything is in disorder, half of the country is unhappy , business are suffering and our president in missing in action. Where is our heading ?

  4. I am almost always wrong. I may be wrong again. But my guess is that there was a maintenance problem.
Things like machinery need maintenance at various intervals – daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, yearly. These are well documented in a log and kept safely. Cars do not just break down. There is almost always a warning signal that was ignored or not noticed. What is true of the car is even truer of the aircraft. Camair-Co authorities know something about this.

As for an oil refinery like SONARA, where pioneer DG, Bernard Ending thought Bassas were the only ones qualified to be employed to run it, well,……

    • @ John Dinga,
You are, definitely, not wrong. The beautiful Cameroon of yesteryears has become the private business organization of a few dunces who have decided to make mediocrity their mantra. My beloved Cameroon is sinking fast and shall soon hit the bottom.

Ambazonia has digital addicts for the sake of the revolution and they are out to decrypt and expllicit everything to the world.

    FREEDOM for AMBAZONIA.

    There is no anglophone problem.
Those who believe this is merely a maintenance fault should tell us when Bassas and Bulus took over SONARA? So why did the explosion wait for SONARA to become a target of Ambazonians to occur?
The explosion cuts resources which would have accrued to the enemy to finance its war against our people.
Unless the investigation demonstrates beyond reasonable doubt that the explosion is accidental I would credit this move to the ADF

  7. Whatever the cause, all the signs are written on the wall that something is fundamentally wrong with Cameroon. Nothing is working, the CDC is down, hosting rights for CAN 2019 withdrawn, war raging in the NW and SW, Boko Haram ravishing the North, CAR refugees inundating the country, over a million people displaced, opposition leaders jailed, no one can have a different opinion from that of the oppressive regime. A government for the government.

The way forward is that change must come to Cameroon and a big one, because if you build a house of cards, no matter what you do, when the cards start crumbling you won’t be able to stop the avalanche. The cards are falling apart!

There is nothing wrong with Cameroon. Cameroon is under constant attack from secessionist terrorists!

The secessionist terrorists shut down production at the CDC by terrorizing over 12,000 CDC workers not to go to work. The amba terrorists have cut off the fingers of over 3000 CDC workers.

The terrorists contributed to the withdrawal of the hosting rights for CAN 2019 by creating an atmosphere of insecurity in Cameroon.

There is no war in the NW/SW. The people of the NW/SW are under terrorist attack and the government is doing its best to track down and neutralize the terrorists.

The way forward is for the amba scammer leaders in the diaspora and their enablers to stop leading/enabling terrorism and for the terrorist to put down their dane guns and seek amnesty.

  8. Yes @Epee you are very correct. The ADF carefullly calculated and orchestrated this move with the help of trustworthy Bamileke sympathizers from LRC. These partners are sympathetic to our cause because they believe we can coexist better as neighbors and learn from each other as we share intellectual capital but we must first of all bend the dictator’s spine by increasing economic sabotage, occupation cost and inflict temporary insanity to the Bulu old head. Thank you to our Bamileke family.

This is just the surface that has been scratched. The blueprint involves taking down completely, the Ndial oil wells and the illicit activity the criminal French are conducting in Befaka in an area natives are not allow to thread as they ship back the loot to France in coffins.

    Long live Ambaland

    • Hearsay is the greatest setback of the gullible and the uninitiated, compounded by the zeal of self-glorification and passing for what one is not. It is so irresistible to claim credit for bringing down SONARA. The problem is that Everyone is claiming credit for it. It is like the entire military industrial complex of the US, not just Admiral William McCraven and his elite unit in Abbotabad claiming to have neutralized Osama bin Laden!

      • Dinga, there’s no hearsay here. Don’t delve into conundrums your generation cannot stand especially when we were plunge into this mess by earlier generations of yours. Have a nice day.

    • Kumkum Pass Garri

      @l’enemie

You are definitely ignorant, delusional and stupid.

SONARA is not the first oil refinery in the world to have been burnt down by fire.

SONARA has insurance that will compensate the corporation for the losses.

The cause of the fire will be determined by the insurance company using renown global experts and the fire systems in place in SONARA.

The shut down of operations at SONARA means that more people and businesses from the NW/SW of Cameroon have lost their source of income.
Is the ambazonia plan to starve people in the NW/SW until they achieve independence?

Why are the ambas in the diaspora not depriving their children of education and starving themselves to death too? Mark Baretta says they will fight till the last man in ground zero dies excluding himself.

  9. When i write what others write in different words, it is a duty to always delete it.

  10. Loin of the desert.

why running to declared force majeure… without investigating the reasons for the fire, and publish that finding. I see this as maintenance problems. the operation manager and safety manager need to be questioned.. they shouldn’t hide behind force majeure….it a big lie.

    • Kumkum Pass Garri

      @Loin of the dead

What SONARA did is what all oil refineries in the world do in such circumstances.

The first thing to do is to declare Force Majeure! That’s what the executives of any oil refinery in the world will do.

You do not need to complete your investigation before you declare Force Majeure. It is necessary to immediately declare Force Majeure in this case to remove the liability associated with SONARA not being able to fulfil its obligations due to the fact that their production plant burnt down.

I am not surprised that amba fools and terrorists who do not even know the meaning of the term “Force Majeure” are here claiming that SONARA should not have declared “Force Majeure”.

Who said the ambafools are not the most foolish people from the NW &S W?

  11. They want to blame it on Amba boys and continue killing and killing the youths,
who dared protest against paul biya from 2016. Every happening on our land,
has just this one reason. Once it is accomplished, all massacres from 2016, will
be covered up and no accountability and punishment will take place.
Biya, is the devil we are told is running around the land, opposing God. He will
play all the delay tactics and lies telling, to achieve his plan big time. And no one,
    is stopping him so far.

  12. What is SONARA to the average Anglophone?
Black gold extracted by Europeans in collaboration black Africans who are so greedy to take their share and deny the indigenes any economic benefit from their land.
I went to government school Bota whilst first class Francophone Cameroonians were getting a different kind of education in a school in SONARA created for them only by the hypercentralized Francophone government in Yaoundé. Shame!
For those who ask why we fight for self rule maybe when you begin to understand that black Africans collaborate with France to enslave us on our land simply because we are Anglophones imagine.
This injustice will end with this generation. Shegheh!
Black gold to benefit France and elite Francophones. Why?
    Who is fooling who?
    Low IQ.

    • Kumkum Pass Garri

      @LUM

Please don’t blame your wretchedness on SONARA because you did not get “a different kind of education in a school in SONARA”.

I was not privileged to attend nursery school. I went to Krumunjang primary school in Bamenda, went to CCC Mubang, Longla College and PCHS Bamenda. Thanks to my basic education from Cameroon I am now living a fulfilled life in the diaspora.

Delusional LUM is fooling HIGH IQ LUM that SONARA is to blame for his/her wretchedness in life.

No one asks why you fight for self rule:

Everyone is asking: If you are fighting for self rule, why deprive your own children of education, why kill the teachers and destroy the health facilities?

HIGH IQ LUM, please find out from DELUSIONAL LUM and respond!

HIGH IQ LUM is the slave of DELUSIONAL LUM!

  13. It is so comforting to state that there was fortunately no loss of human life. Well, how about the material damage? Is it enough to think that all those employees, some of them visibly foreigners, will not lay claim to losses? Should this not open Pandora’s box about the issue of INSURANCE? If Cameroonians do not count for purposes of insurance payment, can the same be said of all the foreign employees? What next then???????????

  14. They will fry the remaining Amba boys like fish. All of them. They should grinde all of them , all the bloody fowls .

  15. Hahaha Amba platform. Editor always delete posts not in line with Amba . Now he is sleeping . posts will be gone when he wakes up hahahah .
