CmeroonOnline.ORG | A Nigerian court has delivered a ruling that resonates beyond its borders, particularly for Cameroonians. In Cross River State, a High Court ordered the Nigeria Police to pay N1 million in damages for the unlawful arrest and detention of Cameroonian youth leader and senator, Manghe Romeo Etta.
As reported by The Guardian Nigeria, the case stemmed from allegations that a BMW in Etta’s possession was stolen. However, evidence presented in court established his ownership, undermining the basis for his arrest. The judge found that the police had acted without sufficient justification, violating his rights.
Although Etta sought much higher compensation, the court’s award, along with the order to release the seized vehicle, sends a clear message: authority must be exercised within the law.
For Cameroonians, this case serves as a reminder that justice can prevail, even beyond national borders, when due process is upheld.
