Canada to facilitate Cameroon peace process: Foreign Affairs Minister Joly

Tri-City News | OTTAWA — The federal government says Canada will guide a peace process aimed at resolving the ongoing crisis in Cameroon where years of fighting and strife have displaced nearly 800,000 people.

Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly says there is an agreement by groups in the west-central African country to enter a process to reach a comprehensive, peaceful and political resolution of the conflict.

Joly says in a release that Canada will help the groups as part of its commitment to promote peace and security and advance support for democracy and human rights.

She says civilians are bearing the brunt of the ongoing crisis, with more than 6,000 deaths since 2017 and 600,000 children do not have full access to education.

Joly says the groups include the Republic of Cameroon, the Ambazonia Governing Council and the Ambazonia Defence Force, the African People’s Liberation Movement and the Southern Cameroons Defence Force, the Interim Government, and the Ambazonia Coalition Team.

According to the United Nations, there has been continued fighting between state security forces and armed groups that has led to the killing and displacement of civilians, including attacks on schools and children.

“Canada has accepted the mandate to facilitate this process, as part of our commitment to promote peace and security and advance support for democracy and human rights,” Joly said Friday.

“The agreement to enter a formal process is a critical first step toward peace and a safer, more inclusive and prosperous future for civilians affected by the conflict.”

A government source said there were earlier meetings in Toronto and Quebec to allow for the negotiations to take place between the different groups.

The source said Canada is the only facilitator of the peace process.

  1. It is now abundantly clear to all and sundry fhat Dictator Biya’s military option has failed PANTS ON FIRE.
The evil dictator must now NEGOTIATE with Ambazonians in the presence of an international third party.
Simply put, Dictator Biya must now begotiate with the so-called TERRORISTS he earlier vowed NEVER EVER to negotiate with.

    • Over 700 LRC terrorists have deserted, IEDs planted by Amba boys were resulting to daily casualties, the financial burden of the war has bankrupt the country. Dictator Biya therefore had to accept to gialogue with the so-called terrorists WITHOUT PRECONDITIONS. Parties to the negociation are Ambazonia and LRC. There is no place on planet earth known as ‘ NOSO of LRC ‘.

    • Ambazonia is Ambazonia
      LRC is LRC
Both nations are independent. LRC therefore has ZERO LEGAL AUTHORITY to grant Ambazonia a socalled SPECIAL STATUS.
Only fools still daydream about such a FRAUD.

  2. Asehhh na this level ye don reach? Mighty biya go negotiate? Wona sure?…..coz i no say pa biya fit bribe canada. Well we are watching and hearing the outcome.
